GRADUATION TIME GRADUATION TI-HIIII-HIMMME
Birthday @Ben
Ben begins to put the watch on, staring down at it as she speaks. “I would have loved to have met him.” He says softly, Ben looks up then hand reaching out to cup her cheek. “Hey, hey, c’mere. It’s not just my birthday.” He reassures her. It’s Jo’s day too. A day of remembrance and of celebration, of things gained and lost. “…It’s all going to be okay…”
Jo leaned into his touch and dashed her hand across her eyes. It was rare for her to cry and she always hated it, no matter how legitimate the reason and she fought for control over her emotions. “I wasn’t going to do this today…” she told him apologetically. Glancing down, she took his hand in hers, admiring the watch on his wrist. “It suits you…”
“I’m glad you did.” Ben whispers to her, kissing a few of her tears away. She’s so small in his arms like this, a perfect fit. “Thank you for this, I really can’t thank you enough. I-I know that this means a lot to you, and it means so much to me too.”
“Really?” Jo asked, looking back up at him. It was true - she had almost chickened out. It had been Adam’s encouragement before he left that made her decide to go through with it. “Thanks for being so understanding…It does mean a lot to me, but so do you…” She snuggled deeper into his arms, seeking his comfort; she’d been worried about how he would react to the gift and the news but she should have known Ben would take it well.
“I love you…” He says against her lips. “Thank you for trusting me, and loving me.” He holds the watch up to the light then and grins at her. “A good watch for a good man.”

Birthday @Ben
Ben’s smiled dropped, turning into something much more reserved as she explained. Seventeen years ago? He had only been alive for a year, his life barely begun, and something so monumental had happened to Jo already. He takes the box, fingers steady on it, open it reverently.
“Oh Jo…” He whispers, handling it carefully as he pulls it out, looking at it from every side. “…This…this means so much…” He mumbles, practically speechless.
Jo nodded and cleared her throat. “I don’t want to ruin the mood - today is still about celebrating your birthday. I just…I wanted you to have it and I thought you should know,” she said quietly. “There aren’t a lot of things that make me smile on a day like today…You’re one of the exceptions to that. I think…He would have liked you, Ben.”
She bit her lip then, cutting herself off so that she wouldn’t cry. After all this time it was still harder than she expected to talk about her father’s death.

Birthday @Ben
After they’d finished dinner Jo sliced the cake and gave them each a generous helping. She ate maybe half her own piece before shoving it aside, too full to eat any more.
“Okay, time for your present…but before I give it to you, it needs a little explanation,” she said, licking her lips nervously. “Today isn’t a day I usually celebrate…in fact, usually on this day I’m not a lot of fun to be around. I’ll explain why in a minute.” She pulled a small box wrapped in blue paper from her bag and slid it across the table to him. “This belonged to my father. My mom gave it to him, and on the day he died she gave it back to me. It was 17 years ago, today…”
Inside the box was a fairly simple watch on a wide leather band. On the back of the watch face was etched To Bill, love E & J.

…-ponders for a moment- Maybe food first? I am hungry.
*hides the cake and starts setting the table for dinner* You got it. It’s almost done - just waiting on the rolls to finish since I used the oven for the c-a-k-e first. *grins*
Ugh you’re killin’ me here. -he pretends to double over with a groan-
“Here, have an appetizer…” Jo dips her finger in the left over frosting and swipes it on his nose with a giggle just before the timer beeps again. She turns and pulls the rolls from the oven, giving them a second to cool while she puts the chicken, potatoes and green beans on the table. “See, that wait wasn’t so bad was it?”
“I guess not.” Ben says petulantly, sitting at the table in the spot that will be across from Jo. Everything smells amazing. “Better yet I can’t smell the cake now.” Ben chuckles as he smiles at her. He scoops some of the frosting off his nose and paints it down her cheek, laughing even harder as he does.

It’s your birthday - you want dessert first or dinner?
-wiggles about on the counter- …….Later. -he jumps down, deliberately not making eye contact with the delicious looking cake-
*laughs* alright, that means dinner now? Should I hide the cake? Or distract you real food? Or your present…?
